Earlier versions of some of the chapters in this volume were presented at a conference on ‘A Radical History of Development Studies’ at IDPM in November 2002. Over the years I have benefited greatly from discussions with students at the Institute for Development Policy and Management, University of Manchester (IDPM), particularly those on the Social Policy and Social Development programme, about their experiences of studying and doing development. I would also like to thank my friend and colleague Martin Minogue, with whom I first began to develop these ideas on the genealogy of development studies. It brought together some of the leading thinkers in Development Studies, all of whom were friends and acquaintances. XiThis edited collection, first published in 2005, was for me a labour of love. Through these recollections they challenged conventional, unilinear histories of development and critiqued orthodox theories and practices, critiques that had until then been largely excluded from mainstream development discourse. The chapters combined their personal experiences with institutional and ideological histories of the emergence and growth of the development industry.
